Getting into the swing of things each morning can sometimes feel like a struggle. Whether it’s the hectic and stressful summer activity schedule that’s draining us or we’re sore from a good summer workout- starting the day on a positive note is not always easy. However, by setting up an intentional routine for our morning schedules, we can incorporate actions that ensure a more optimistic and productive day ahead. Here are a few ideas to consider adding into your day:
Get up early. It may seem counterintuitive, but getting up early, and around the same time each day, can benefit your entire day. Oversleeping or pressing snooze multiple times can put us in a funk or make us feel groggy – not a great way to start your morning. If you have children at home, setting your alarm to get up before they do will give you quiet, calm time to yourself without interruption, and give you a chance to build in a few other activities as well.
Take deep breaths. Meditation and deep breathing can positively impact many aspects of our lives and help us set a positive tone for the day. Taking a few minutes to reflect inwardly before diving into the rest of your routine can ensure you are in the best possible mindset to tackle whatever life throws at you.
Drink water. Before heading directly for the coffeepot upon waking, sip on a big glass of water. There are so many benefits to properly hydrating, and doing so first thing in the morning can positively impact your overall well-being. Try slicing up some lemon or warming up a mug of water to make it easier or more interesting.
Move your body. Once you’ve hydrated, make time to exercise. While being physically active any time of day is great, making time to go for a walk or try a new exercise app early in the day ensures you fit in your workout as well as gives you a boost of energy to start your day. You can also use local resources like the Steve Cohr’s Wellness Center.
Set goals. Now is a good time to pour that first cup of coffee and grab a notepad. Listing out your priorities for the day creates a roadmap to help you meet your goals. It may not be possible to achieve them all, but looking back at those crossed off items at the end of the day will give you a sense of accomplishment. Maybe you have a big project you want to tackle at work, or you want to clean out your closet. Break it down into manageable chunks and list out your tasks one day at a time. Before you know it, you’ll be on a streak and will feel like you can take on anything you set your mind on.
Fuel smartly. Finally, make sure to eat a nutritious breakfast. Starting the day with a healthy meal can help your brain and body function better and continue the positive momentum you’ve already created.
