Clean your fireplace area on an annual basis, also making sure to keep the chimney free of any debris
Don't leave fires burning while unattended
Don't burn holiday decoration like wreaths or trees, or wrapping paper, in the fireplace
Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children, and in a locked area
Use flameless candles near flammable objects
Keep candles out of reach of children and where they can't be accidentally knocked over
Use a screen on a fireplace while a fire is burning
