MCMC Welcomes Dr. Tarbet - full time Ortho Doctor

January 2011, Slayton, MN - The Murray County Medical Center proudly welcomes it’s newest staff member, Dr. Joyce Tarbet. Dr. Tarbet specialty lies with Orthopaedics which deals with the cause, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of injuries that may occur to muscles, bones, and joints, negatively impacting mobility. Dr. Tarbet will help provide patients with the most current treatments to help them regain mobility.
Dr. Tarbet served as a physician for the United States Women’s National Soccer Team. Specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, Dr. Tarbet helped professional athletes stay competitive. “These athletes devoted their lives to performing at anelite level, and in the event of an injury it was my job to restore them to the highest level of athletic ability possible,” says Dr. Tarbet.
Though she is hailed as a highly respected sports medicine doctor, she takes great pride in other types of orthopaedics. “The unique challenges of sports medicine are magnified because of the high expectations and demands of athletes to return to their previous level of competition,” said Dr. Tarbet. “I believe that this level of expectation combines with proper patient education benefits my entire patient population. There is no greater satisfaction than being able to help a patient return to their desired activities.”
Dr. Tarbet was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. She also did her medical schooling Canada and went on to orthopaedic residency training at McGill University, Montreal. Dr. Tarbet went on to pursue a fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Following her schooling, Dr. Tarbet remained in Chicago working with the practice she had done her fellowship training with.
After a few years, Dr. Tarbet decided to branch out on her own and served in a suburban hospital in Chicago where she practiced for nine years. During that time, Dr. Tarbet, was sought after for her sports medicine expertise and was also a frequent speaker on athletic injuries, rehabilitation and prevention. She has authored several papers in orthopaedic sports medicine literature and was an active teacher to undergrad medical students.
Due to reshuffling at the Chicago hospital, Dr. Tarbet decided to look for other opportunities which in the end led her to Murray County. “I thought that I would move forward with a new adventure here,” said Dr. Tarbet. Murray County Medical Center’s state of the art surgical unit was one of the enticing factors in bringing Dr. Tarbet to Slayton. She also commented on the warm welcome she received upon interviewing. “They were very receptive and excited about bringing on a full time orthopaedic surgeon,” comments Dr. Tarbet. She went on to say, “I believe that MCMC will give me economic flexibility and allow me to do some of the surgeries that I want to do.” She stated that MCMC still had all the pluses that are included in a big academic setting of a suburban hospital including cutting edge technology with computerized and digital x-rays and electronic medical records. “So even though you’re coming to a rural setting, MCMC still has the kind of high-end technology that is attractive,” concluded Dr. Tarbet.
Bringing compassion and good care to the community are high on Dr. Tarbet’s list of priorities for her practice at MCMC. “I have a passion for the sports medicine part of orthopaedics,” explained Dr. Tarbet. She relishes the opportunity to extend this passion to the communities of the surrounding areas. “I’ve been very blessed to work with professional athletes and I’d like to bring that level of care down to the amateur athletes of the schools, community recreation or the individuals enjoying any type of sport,” says Dr. Tarbet. She plans to visit the area schools and offer her services to aid their athletic programs.
“My other passion is doing knee replacements,” said Dr. Tarbet. As with many rural areas, elderly are the predominant population. “I hope to keep the elderly as independent as possible.” In Dr. Tarbet’s spare time you may see her out and about running or on the local golf course.
Dr. Tarbet is also a pioneer in her field employing the precision of Computer Navigated Surgery (CNS) for joint replacement procedures. According to Dr. Tarbet CNS helps reach a higher level of joint survivorship.
Dr. Tarbet holds professional memberships in the American Medical Association, the American College of Sports Medicine, the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society, Professional Team Physicians, the Chicago Sports Medicine Society, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
